Assessment
As stated in the assignment description, having a deeper comprehension of color theory will afford a student with a greater ability to communicate visually.
In addition to assigning a student a random color constraint, they are also tasked with developing a preliminary color study to explore their idea at a smaller scale. The intent of the color study, is to instill the habit of producing preparatory studies and sketches to inform their process before developing a larger work. This process also provides students with some foresight into their creative decisions, and allows them to make any necessary changes before moving forward on the larger work.
The student examples that I've highlighted all demonstrate the student's ability to adhere to their color constraint, and develop imagery that is complements their predetermined color harmony. Furthermore, with this assignment, students begin to explore content and imagery that is more distinctive to them and their interests and capabilities.

Assessment
For the last assignment of the term, students are randomly assigned a work by an accomplished representational painter.
However, instead of simply recreating the assigned painting, students are expected to use the framework of the original as a jumping-off point to explore a contemporary topic, which is a methodology used by many artists, such as Kehinde Wiley.
The selected examples from students, all demonstrated either a technical sophistication, and/or a thoughtful concept that paired well with the imagery.
